What the hell do you want it to look like? If the wheels are round is someone going to complain that looks like a BMW too? Jeez... [headbang]

Some originality would be great. Mercedes electronic key fob, you still have to turn it like a key to start the car. Anyhow, my friend brought his new 3 Series in for service, the advisor took his key fob, inserted it into the computer at his desk and viola, the key contained ALL the info on the car, milage, burnt out bulbs etc. Pretty hot.

So Merc is better because they kept the outdated design? [confused]

I think they're better because they don't have that ugly START/STOP button.

The newest VW passats have this type of fob. It was only a matter of time until it appeared on Audis I suppose.

I plan on buying my B8 with the wireless/advanced key, and from what I read I can just keep the key in my pocket and drive the car by pushing the Start button. The key from A5 looks great, I don't mind keeping in the pocket though.

START/STOP button means you get to keep the key in your pocket, how could you not want that?
I didn't see the A4 one yet but the S8 start/stop button looks great, I can't wait until more cars have this.

Oh, so they copied Lexus!
[:D] just kidding.
Audi did not copy BMW. BMW didn't bring this idea to the market. Actually BMW brought it to the 3 series quite late after Lexus.
Also, BMW brought the "keyless" fob in a very awkward way to the 3 series.
Instead of a key, you insert the fob and push it to lock, then you push the start button. It's actually quite annoying. Instead of one motion where you insert a key and then turn to start, with BMW you inseart the fob, secure it, and then push a button to start, more steps.
Then, quite a few months later you could order a 3 with the "OPTION" of keeping the key in your pocket and starting just with the button.
Option? Really? So, BMW make the ignition annoying, then offer the customer the option of giving them more money to make the "keyless" fob actually work in a "keyless" way.
If Audi does the same when they introduce it, then they will be copying a bad BMW idea. The only think cool about a keyless fob is if, and only if, you can start your car by keeping the key in your pocket the way Lexus introduced it.
Still, it's a solution to a non problem in my view. It's a neat luxury item, and should be an option where people can pay more for it. However, it will be added in to keep per unit cost down, but it will raise the overall price on every vehicle. I'll get used to it, but it's not something I can't live with out. It's very much like "rain sensing" wipers, pointless really.
But, it gets marketed and then people think they must have it, like message texting on a perfectly good cell phone where you can actually hear the other person and be heard by the other person. Wow, what a concept, a telephone. Now I won't have to type my messages. I'm sure glad we're past the days fo the telegraph. [:p]
I want the "key" chip inserted under my skin, maybe somewhere below my elbow. Then, I don't even have to have a fob.
The chip will store car data while I'm driving, and when I go in for service the "chip" reader will transmit all the needed data along with how my body got pissed off when the problem/s started happening. I won't actually have to get mad, the reader will display my displeasure.

Just wait until that Start/Stop button fails .. haha. My CLK had the problem with the keyless go. The car wouldn't start period, with the key in the ignition or by pressing the button, apparently it was all one system. I had to get it towed to MB. It's a great feature, don't get me wrong .. loved it. But when technology fails, sometimes the old fashion way is best.

I'm still getting used to the wipers but I can't get over how nice it is to no longer have to worry about switching my headlights on/off. The more things they make auto (besides the tranny) the better!
I'd actully like to see them make the mirrors automatically fold in when you shut the car off and vice versa.

You don't wanna go the hell, do you? Or you are the only one who didn't hear about the Bible, chapter: Apocalipse - it's written black on white, all who will use the chip in their right hand or forehead will be under the power of the beast (go figure who's that). Even if it is just a HUGE coincidence, I won't chip myself now or in the future (although they are trying to introduce that form of paying lately.) I know it can sound stupid, but if a book that is thousands of years old can predict something like that it is at least weird. The new chip implant sounds really good: money, credit cards, driver license, medical card/insurance all in the chip that is in your hand, you can't loose it or forget it at home. But than, read this:
"Revelation 13:16 And he* causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." *-the beast.
"Revelation 14.9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

A chip isn't necessarily the mark of the beast and I won't follow satan because I happen to have a chip in me. We are still judged by our actions and intentions, not merely by the presence of a chip.

A chip isn't necessarily the mark of the beast and I won't follow satan because I happen to have a chip in me. We are still judged by our actions and intentions, not merely by the presence of a chip.
I wouldn't dare starting a heavy conversation about this subject, this is an Audi forum not a religious one. As we all know religion and politics are hard to discuss, but I can drop some of my opinions:
You won't follow satan just cause you have a "666" license plate(not saying that u do, just an example). But it's written that 666 is the number of the beast/satan, so even if you are not a Christian, why play with the fire? Why take the chance, especially since you won't receive anything back(maybe a few guys will think you are cool for having a license pl like that, but that's all). Especially that you do not know for sure it's fake. It's impossible to prove the Bible is fake with what the science knows right now - believe me or not, I have tried so many times, I still try, just to make sure it's true. If you disagree we can start another thread, not in the B8 section, and start another discussion about science/Bible where we don't bother others.
A chip is not necessarily the mark of the beast just cause it's a chip. But when you are told clearly (in the Bible if you are a Christian) something like "don't steal, don't lie, don't kill, be good to others" and so on, you agree with me anyone should follow those "suggestions", right? After all, it's common sense, a decent police officer(in any country in the world) will tell you the same thing even if he never heard about religion. So, if that chip we are talking about is just a chip than fine. But if it meets other conditions, than it can be something else. It can be something the Bible says you should not use, and if you want to respect the Bible you are suppose to follow it. Even if you don't like it. So your actions are wrong when you do not respect the word of God(including the chip), right? And if you read the Bible you will find out that not only our actions/intentions are the ones who will save/condemn us. Mostly is about Jesus. Remember the other 2 guys on the cross, near Jesus? One went into Heaven just because he felt bad about stealing (etc) in his life, and he believed Jesus is indeed the Son of God and that's it. Now, don't tell me that thief's actions were the thing that saved him, he was on the cross for killing and doing "bad" stuff. Obviously didn't get into heaven cause he was a nice guy.
That is a "religious" aspect. Not heavily explained, there are tons of things I could say about what JMG said, it's way to long to write down all the religious aspect where I think he is partially wrong. Actually not even wrong, just short, just missing a few (important) points.
Not everyone subscribes to your beliefs.
I didn't ask anybody to subscribe to my beliefs.
As a scientific aspect, the problem is interesting though, since "beliefs" are supported by feeling, by religion, by how you are raised etc. As I see this chip issue, if it will indeed happen (we are not there yet), is at least weird coincidences , way to many coincidences to be a mistake. I am sure who will implement it will have a very good&plausible explanation, that won't make me wonder how can be it be exactly the same story as in a ~2000 years old book. Cause scientifically nobody can explain a prediction like that: a chip/mark that you have to have in order to buy or sell. Exactly what the real world is talking about: the chip will be your full wallet. You realize that when the Bible was written it was very hard for that period to realize how can just a mark to stop you so easily from buying stuff. At that time they were mostly trading goods.. But now, if they eliminate the cash, we have to use credit/debit cards (myself prefer/use plastic instead of cash payments). If they change the plastic to a chip, you will have to use the chip or starve to death. It's not hard to imagine: how will you get your groceries if you can't pay for them? Clothes? Gas? What about your paycheck, if the system is setup to only allow "chipped" people to work?
I don't think there is a reason to panic right now. But there are so many other coincidences between the Bible and the chip issue that I know for sure I will not accept it. Others will; go ahead if you feel it's the right thing to do for you.
Long explanations, I don't wanna sound crazy, but if "my beliefs"-as TSlice says- turn to reality somewhere in the future than it's not a myth anymore, it's a fact. Until then, yes, it is just a coincidence [;)]

Don't let good sarcasm go to waste by challenging it with religious dogma.
My point is that "keyless" ignition is a solution to a non-problem, just like the rain sensor.
I think you missed that.
And, to address your dogma, are you serious?
That old biblical passage is no more prophetic than Nostradamus's incoherent written ramblings.
A chip compared to a "number of the beast"....?
Computer chips, credit card chips, nacho chips, potato chips...it's da Debul.

I meant "apocalypse" [:D] and yes, I was dead serious. Not dead yet.
About the chip: I will gladly accept to wear it in my watch, or in my phone. Just when it comes to that prediction I don't feel like I need to follow it. It's not about the numbers, if you read what I posted, the number 666 it's just like (in the Bible) another name for the beast, the devil, satan or what ever u like calling that thing.
I did NOT compared chip<>numbers >> What u saying has no relevance.
Again: old book says there will be someone who will MAKE you have a sign on the right hand/forehead in order to live properly in this world. It didn't happen yet, will see if and when it will. Until then it can be a non-sense for you or for me too, at this point. But such a coincidence will not be easy to swallow (That if you know everything it's said in that old book about this issue), cause it's huge.
I didn't pay attention to the sarcasm there..when you said that in the beginning. My reply was more like a joke, but for me it could be a fact somewhere in the future too. Just like when u tell someone: hey, don't drive so fast, you'll die one day. You don't really mean that, but it could be true. My younger brother just totaled a 2 years old MB C-class although I was joking with him quite often about his driving style/lack of experience at the wheel. He is just fine, airbags and seatbelt let nothing happen to him but some minor bruises. Now I can not joke anymore about his driving cause he is turning red and start explaining me how bad is it to joke about something so serious. He had nightmares quite a few nights after that .. he was crashing again. At least he got another new C-class.
About the keys:
For me it is a really nice thing to just open the doors without looking for the keys in my pocket. Maybe for women too, since they need 5 minutes to find them. I only need a few seconds, but it's not the time issue. If you don't appreciate it, than don't get that option :)
I like technology, I also like the fact it will help me a little. I drive a manual(for the last 10 years), but when something is better than what I have (in my opinion) I will choose the better option(waiting for DSG in the B8 S4??!).
It's happening to me every time I go shopping: have to put my bags down to find that key in the pocket. Than if it's raining or wet the bags will get wet and I hate putting something dirty in my trunk. Yeah, I really like my car clean, so what? Not once happened to me to put my cellphone/wallet on the car just to look for the keys, and than forget it there until the first stop light when I see it flying... Didn't ever loose it ... yet. Anytime I have different things in my hands (my laptop or soo) I have to move all thing in one hand so I can grab the keys with the other. Whatever man, don't like it don't buy it. It will be standard in 10-20 years but it's not yet :)
In the end, I know you will like it too, you just need some time to adjust to the idea of being "lazy". Rain sensor and other "useless" features are good, why disregard them? What do you feel about automatic lights? I have a friend who drives a Focus with no options on it and he gets pulled over a lot for driving late in the afternoon with the lights off. His excuses: it's not night yet/ I forgot/too many street lights to see I have no lights. For people like him it's a great thing. Too bad he doesn't have it:)

First I read in the center of the car .. I started thinking about the Saab, how they have their key right where ANYBODY in the car can turn it off whenever. I wonder when will they move it, since it's so easy for a kid to kill your engine(and power steering/brakes) by mistake. And still, they kept there for the last ... 20 years?

Wow! I thought I would never see the day when someone would actually insert their fundamentalist beliefs in a car forum... I guess it was bound to happen... another sign that the apocalypse is near[;)]

It's not hard to imagine: how will you get your groceries if you can't pay for them? Clothes? Gas? What about your paycheck, if the system is setup to only allow "chipped" people to work?
My goodness, how ever did mankind survive withough groceries, clothes and gas? Paychecks have only been around since the 1700's

Where u from?
CA?
You wanna bet you will never adjust of going back to a farm to produce your daily needs(meat, bread, vegetables.. etc)?
Common man, nobody even cooks anymore (in US), what about planting your own onion. Like I wanna do that soon .. yeah, I can barely wait.
Besides being ironically "smart" do you have a real comment to add? Nobody said you can not survive naked and eating fresh grass, but did u try it? What are u gonna do for gas? Ride a bike to work? When I was working in CA I was traveling about 30 miles one way (to work) every day, other of my friends even more. I think you will become very fit if you bike 2-3 hours just to get to work. Are u gonna be able to ride back home, after eating only grass??[:D] By the way, how are you gonna buy that bike? Exchange it for the 100 lbs of onion?
As nobody said humanity can not survive, you being ironic only shows how ignorant are people today: forget religion, do you really believe you will be able to make it without "groceries, clothes and gas?" How convenient will that be? Just be smart enough and acknowledge that the majority of people will have a VERY hard time trying to adjust. And although you think you will, if the whole system goes down, many people won't.
The paycheck are here and won't go away. Is it so hard for you to see that? So what if they are here since (only) 1700?
It's a proven fact that after a person sees a better life he/she will feel even worse when life is taking him/her downhill. Yes, you will adjust, but it's not gonna be funny.

Damn.... I thought this was about Audi's new keyless entry system.....
I'm fairly certain that BMW's smart entry system doesn't require the key to be in the dash to start the car, only present in the car. My friend has an '06 and he told me that it only had to be in the dash for charging purposes, not to start the car..... Correct me if I'm wrong please.

The world has been based on religion since it's conception. Praying to God or to a thunderstorm, it's still a form of religion.
Just cause people are ashamed to write it on forums doesn't mean they have no beliefs! US alone was consolidated on Christian religion, the dollars bills where showing signs of that until recently. The US Constitution (the one that everybody said is soo great, and I do agree) is again heavily based on thing taken from the Bible, written by people who where Christians in the whole sense of that word.
But since you find it so weird to bring a small religion thing (it all started from that joke with the chip "tiesto" did) such a tiny prophecy about a chip, I made another thread in the OTHERS section, so if anyone has anything to say about religion, please go there. I really wanna keep this about the new B8. No reason to piss other members. And if I did, sorry.
If you need to respond (religious wise) please go to:

In the BMW's, you have to pay $500 extra in the 3 series for the "Confort Access" option so that you don't have to physically insert the key into the ignition.

It's a great option imo. Don't see why anyone would'nt want that.. well worth the 500$.

Because Lexus includes it in it's price.
BMW charges extra for something that should be part of the base price.
Afterall, they decided to use a "fob" instead of a "key", but you use the fob as a key anyway. It's quite stupid.
Why wouldn't I want to pay $500 for "keyless"?
Because it's a pointless item. A mere illusion of necessity, a solution to a "problem" that does not exist. It's also too expensive when similar systems in lower priced cars cost much less. The BMW version doesn't work any better than the systems that cost much less.
It's one thing to pay for a better product, it's quite another to simply pay more for the same thing. That wouldn't be smart. [:D]
"The Ultimate Keyless Entry Key. By BMW" $500.

Most Jap manufactures like Lexus , Acura , and Infiniti also include other things into the price that German's don't .. such as power seats.. and larger displacement more powerful motors..When it comes to German cars , you have to pay for what you get. As I'm sure you know that by now.
No one , including BMW is trying trick anyone into thinking comfort access is a necessity, as everyone is capable of putting a key into the ignition and turning it. It is merely a matter of convenience and luxury. And if you don't want it , don't get it.. That's why it's called an 'option'. They leave it up to you. I've yet to hear anyone who has opted for it , regret it. To each his own ..

Your first statement is broad and obvious. That is why I said you pay for that which is better. In the case of keyless entry/start the BMW system is NO better. Thus, the "option" is too expensive for what it is supposed to offer.
BTW I didn't say "trick, I said an "illusion", but whatever. Marketing is designed to make one want something by attempting to create a want and desire that was not there before. It could be referred to as manipulative, but I wouldn't say it "trickery".
If you think not having to turn a key is "luxury" that's your choice. But, that "feature" is even now being offered in very non luxury cars.
Also, you say you don't see why anyone would NOT want it.
I'm offering a few reasons for why someone wouldn't want it, namely high cost and 0 utility for some.
It's only an option is some higher end brands, as it is part of the base car in others.
As an option I can leave it out, as a base feature I wouldn't want it.
To each his own for sure, but at least now you see why someone would not want it. [:)]

I would pay $500 for it. I just find is useful, I like the idea and I want the option on my next car (S4 B8). If you think it's expensive do not add that option. All BMWs are more expensive than similar japanese cars, what is your point? Do you think BMW doesn't know acura or whatever are offering this feature from start?
I felt bad for not getting "useless" but new things in my cars in the past, I won't feel bad about this one now ...I'll get it.
No, I do didn't buy an overpriced Iphone (just cause it's new stuff). And I won't. Stupid good looking phone with no 3G and tiny camera.

BMW found most of its drivers are pretty much beginners that tend to crank the engine too much at starting, so BMW put the push button starter in :) . just kidding. but the push button starter is really helpful to prevent cranking at starting the engine. lol.

The S5 start/stop button is glorious and anyone who feels the need to insert a key solely for the purpose of providing a better driving experience needs a better car and some talent not a better FOB. I do however feel that 500 dollars just to not have to enter a key is a bit steep. One thing I noticed when I was a valet virtually every person when they got back in their ALREADY RUNNING cars they would attempt to start them again...stupid people cant seem to figure this one out for some reason...I think the button is a welcome and extremely positive advance.
