View Full Version : So, it is one thing to be an ass, but another to be an asshole...

A little bit of background here... I am an aircraft maintainer. Fairly important job in the military... So I get called to a ground emergency before a flight is supposed to take off... As I am walking out to my parallel parked car, I notice some asshat parked less than 6" away from my rear and another about the same up front... "OH SHIT" I say to myself... Next thing I know I see the person in the car in front of me get out of the vehicle!! SAVED!! But not really... I ask the person politly to move their vehicle as I had an emergency...
"Man, I am late for work! I gotta go! I don't have time!" as the dude runs off... Not my fault for the dude being a dirtbag asshole... So, the next thing I can think of to cover my ass is to move his vehicle somehow... Go up, his shit is locked... Rock nearby... I grab it and smash his window, open up, alarm goes off and I put it in neutral and undo the e-brake... Roll it forward about 4 feet, yes 4 feet because there was that much room!! I didn't even bother to put the brake back on or put it in gear... Not to mention that a storm was getting ready to come in...
My reasoning... I was trained that if there is an emergency, we need to get out there NOW and do what it takes to get there... No questions asked... Told my supervisor when I get back and he said "Oh well for that dude!" I had no time to wait for any other options!
What would you have done in this situation?!

Getting out of the parking spot would have taken you the same amount of time as finding a rock to break his window and move his car.

You've obviously never attempted maneuvering a car out of that tight of a space. Some tight spots, there's just no getting out of without something getting broken.

Plus the fact that the measurement from the right front corner to the rear left corner is longer then the measurement from front to back. Seems a few guys here need to go back to school seeing that we dont drive round cars.[:p]
Only other way would be to throw 2 of these on the rear tires of the car parked in front of you.[:D] No jack required.

i would have flipped a shit if you broke my window. did you atleast leave a note. is your work(the govt) going to pay for it? plus if you said a storm was coming that would potentially ruin the interior. and you could have atleast put the ebrake back on, who knows, it could have rolled into traffic or something.
i would have been pissed. if it happened to me.
in your situation. i would have told the guy that you were in the military and it was an emergency and that he could get a note from you saying that the military made him move his car....exaggerating the truth so the boss would have to accept it.

The A4 sedan is 176.7" long. The diagonal measurement is 190". Unless you're compressing your bumper shocks and playing bumper cars you'll need more than a foot of total clearance.

Okay first off... Yes, it was legal as I had asked the guy to move... This happened on base... I never said it was a PERSONAL emergency... If it wasn't for people like me going to these "ground emeregency calls" then guess what... I guess the jets would have never taken off during 9/11 to help protect the skys... Do I have a choice in parking the way I did? No not really, that is the only way to park where I work... My line of work isn't just letting aircraft go take off... It is a very important job... Without the airframe that I work on, there is pretty much no flying for the rest of the military... Did you ever think of that? If there is no capability for my aircraft to fly, then there is no capablity for the president to fly, other military aircraft and so on... So, if you parked in front of a fire hydrant in front of your house and it was burning down with your family in it, would you kill the fireman because he had to break your window to save them?

So there is no way that this stranger who was also in a rush could possibly be doing anything nearly as important as what you had to be doing?
I am sure that you have a very important job, and you are undoubtedly a very important person. It is refreshing to know that you thought to break his window, and fail to reset his emergency brake, rather than do ANY damage to your own vehicle for your problem.
At least now I know not to complain about door dings if there are guys like you running around busting out windows bacause they are in a hurry. Way to go!

Does it matter if his stuff was important or not, someone asked him to move his car right after getting out of it so he is the ass for not taking 1 minute out of his time to MOVE his own car forward a few feet. Problem is that a very large amount of people just dont give a shit about anyone but themselfs PERIOD, maybe that guy should learn how to park so other people can get out when they are ready to leave.
Better to have a broken window(which insurance will cover) vs having to pay to get your car out of a tow yard.

so you break his window cuz he didn't move. WRONG. not sure when we all lost our common sense. common curtiousy is a respect given...its not always received but we don't go about things in wrong ways because of the lack there of...
i can't say that the guy wasn't a jerk....but still nothing deserves that. and then people complain why insurance is so high. lesson is don't double park it across and you won't have that problem you could have backed out of the space.

The biggest fact that has come to light is that this was on a military base. Anyone that has military experience will tell you that bases are a different world. Normal rules do not always apply, especially in an emergency. Trials and practices are generally considered to be every bit as critical as real emergencies. It is all about maintaining a certain state of readiness.
Just as an exercise for any that still doubt the difference; flip a cop off and tell him to fuck off. Try the same with an MP or an officer on a military base. Let me know which reaction sucks and which one scares the hell out of you. Maybe just try shoplifting from the PX and see how that goes.

Then he should have busted both of their windows correct?
Well only 1 guy was asked to move and said NO. Plus the fact that he left a huge amount of space in front of his car but backed his bumper up to the car behind him. Both of those facts just says "FUCK YOU" all over it and I guess he got what he was asking for. Hell the guy could have just hit his remote to unlock the car and told him to push it forward then lock it back up. Shit that would have taken him a whole 2 seconds to do without wasting any of his time.
onemoremile
06-27-2007, 07:08 AM
Again, this was on base and not out in the normal civilian world. If the guy came back to his broken window and moved car in the civvy world he'd have a legitimate case. On a military base he's got nothing but a minor complaint. If you work on base then you know the rules. He willfully disobeyed emergency action. Ewok should feel no remorse whatsoever for his actions. He was duty bound to act as he did. Yes, he could have pushed him out of the way but that would have damaged bumpers on two cars which is significantly more expensive than a window.
I can't reiterate this enough- bases are private property of the US goverment. Normal rules do not apply. Park in front of a tank and you'll get a super-sub-compact if they need to get out. Even in the real world if you block in a fire truck you'd better be prepared for a lot of red paint to be rubbed off on your car. I was an Army medic and went through crackerbox (Humvee ambulance) training. When your path is blocked and you can move the impeding obstacle there is only one course of action - drop it into low range and start pushing. The mission always comes before a replaceable personal possession.

Yes but what you were shooting him with doesn't kill, so you had to put it back in your pants.[;)]

Ewok - ever wonder if that guy will track you down and retaliate?
not trying to get into a, "he has no right to retaliate, i was in the right" convo.. but the guy was a "dick", so how can you be sure he's not going to find your car and key it up or something similar?

I just have one question. Did you smash his window because he was a prick, or because it was an emergency and you felt that it was the most efficient way to get your car out? Or maybe it was both, and the fact that the emergency justified your actions was just a happy coincidence for you. You get to smash some prick's windows, and you have a good excuse.
As for it being impossible to get a rectangular shaped car out, with 6 inches play room on both sides... well.. I'd draw a diagram but I'm too lazy. You can drive it forwards and backwards, and each time get the car a bit more "out" to the side, until only the right half is blocked in, while the driver side is more on the road, so to speek. Continue the process until free. Works for all shapes [;)]

Haha. This thread is great. I agree with the OP. Now, someone go answer my question in the A/F thread. =)
