View Full Version : Who Wants to Race???
Most of us will never be professional racecar drivers. Consistently making money in this sport is simply too tough. Furthermore, few sanctioning bodies will mix car models or allow street cars. However, I really would love to see daily driven Evo, C32, M3, STi, S4, 911, etc., piloted by amateurs battle it out for a $100K grand prize.
So I was thinking about the early days of ultimate fighting and poker tournaments. It would not be too difficult to organize a tournament where participants would “buy-in” for lets say $1K and are allowed to drive any street legal car. Driver’s background would need to be checked to avoid pro drivers and each driver would have to demonstrate ability to solo, but the rules could be simple. Each driver gets 3 sets of 10 laps each. The guy with any 5 fastest laps wins it all. Or there could be a “final table” where 10 wining cars do 10 more laps and all get some money. With only 10 cars on the track at any given time there should not be any need for passing. Thus, with no passing this event should be almost as safe as a regular track event.
What do you guys think?

cut the grand prize to about 2000 and the entry fee down to about 200 and you have yourself a deal.

you also have to consider the track fees involved
you also have to consider the track fees involved I have. With about 130 cars competing there should be enough to cover costs and prize. Of course if an event like this pulls in some spectators there could be sponsorship $$ too. The money is easy. I am more concerned with safety. It will suck if someone dies. That’s why no wheel-to-wheel racing.
Lowering price does not make too much sense. Regular track day is about $300. in this even you’ll do almost as much driving and have a chance to win $100K and bragging rights. Plus lowering fees will likely attract wrong crowd. For an event like this you want serious cars driven by people with serious skills. IMHO, a $1K would not be too much for a track junky.

Hey Adam, don’t tell me I posted this in a wrong place. [:p]
No. any street legal car should be allowed. That is kind of part of the point – bring what you got… no rules, no excuses. As long as it has been insured and registered as a street car from the day you bought it, it should be allowed. All I would want to avoid is purpose built racecars and pro drivers. In early days of ultimate fighting there were no rules. It was a street fight. 120lb guys were taking on and sometimes wining against 220lb fighters.
Simple - true fight, true race. How many track events do you think a non-pro driver who owns Porsche GT does?? Probably not many. I can show you many drivers who will outrun him in Geo Metro. Having said that, I am not sure if B6/7 S4s or A4s would be competitive enough.

At this point I am only trying to gauge interest. If this snowballs, I’ll try to organize it. I only have connections in North-East and Canada. Sorry no Cali.

No disrespect, but I do not believe you know what you taking about. M3 (E30, E36 or E46) would not be the biggest threat. M3’s invincibility is just a myth.

Haha ... but, you did [:D] It should go in the "General Car Talk", but i'll put it in chatterbox if you want it to only be a B5 S4 conversation.

Throw a heavy amount of rain on the track and I'm sure there will be more than a few A4's that will be competitive enough.
