I have seen many photos/videos of the centre consoles of the A5/S5,some have the silver button marked engine stop/start some have no button.Does anybody know what the UK car will have? I was told by the stealer that it's an option,I cannot see it as an option on the Audi/UK site.

I believe it's an option. Pay to play! Not sure why it's not listed. I could be wrong though. Maybe the S5 only has it? Not sure.

The "Start" button is part of the optional Advanced Key system where you don't have to put a "key" in the ignition.
Non-Advanced Key cars have a slot that you insert the "key" into and push the "key" in to start the car (ala new VWs), hence, no "Start" button.

*Blah* bollocks! That and electronic hand brake are my two least favorite options on the new Passat. I have heard that these will be on the new A5 (and A4). **BLAH**
IMHO

i just had the new altima as a rental car and it had an engine starter button where you just keep the key in your pocket. IMO great for just getting in & out fast with no hassle of putting hands in your pocket. I just bet a replacement key would be like $200 bucks from Audi.

hahaha what are we becoming as a society if our problems consist of putting our hand in our pockets to get a key out and turn it in an ignition....i love america.

I'd be willing to bet that a new "key" would be more than $200.
A6s and A8s have had a similar option for a few years. Perhaps one of those owners would know.

Toyota/Lexus have gone that route. Humans make way to many mistakes for this kind of technology to be practical. People leave their cars running all day, drain their batteries, and forget the fob in the car (so anyone can just walk up and drive off/steal it).
Theres already a story of a guy leaving his car running while packing up in Chicago for a trip. He left his key fob in the house, took off, and finally shut the car off for gas in Tenn. After filling up, he couldnt restart the car and was stuck untill he could get a new key programmed on Monday at a local dealer.

I have a tdi on order and eventually decided to go for this option...apparently the vehicle knows if you are inside or outside and therefore avoids any comical events such as that above. Hope thats right or else if anyones going to do something like that, it'll be me. I think if your getting a car like this, it'd be rude not to have a little bit of the gadgets available..

The S5 I sat in at the Audi Forum in NY had a start button on the center console. Since it's on a flat surface next to the shifter I am concerned someone may accidentally press it while driving. I hope there's a safety feature for that. It has been a couple months since I sat in the car, but I'm pretty sure that's where it was.
The S5 at the forum was optioned out so I'm not sure what the cost is to add the keyless start, but we'll know once the order forms are released later this year.
