Depends on how much money he has to spend on mods or wants to

If you have/want to spend money on mods, Stick w/ the A4

If you dont, then go w/ the M3

M3.

1025 hp m3. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr7rkMIjByk) I wouldn't go that far but the power potential of a 3.0 or 3.2 straight six turbo is way up there. Straight sixes are inherently balanced engines so they are very smooth.

A friend in Vegas has a purple SC300 that is fully built. 880 at the rear wheels. That car is batshit crazy. Other than the wheels and tires it looks nearly stock.

yeah, the M3>1.8T DEF. M3's are so nice looking, and really fast.

Alright you forgot the part where reality kicks in and you know this dude isnt gonna put on a T-78 Turbo and Supporting mods and software to outperform a BT A4 and reach over 500whp (our potential)

few things you need to consider.
when you see a b5 a4.
people go "oh thats a new car"
because of the rounded body style.

on the E36 m3 though its already an older body style thats outdated.

also
money for money
it costs 4x as much to upgrade an m3 an it does the a4.
