I felt that way too when he took me out in it. But then I remember..crappy metal trunk key release, cheap interior materials, APC seats rebadged STi, boy-racer looks, apparently 12mpg, no folding rear seats, no full size spare, no class. All for the same price.

EVO and STI are nice go-carts but I'd rather be a sec or two behind with a hot girl in the car than 0-60 in a flash with everybody laughing at me :)

I rather be in my car than that STI, full of plastic.

That is my white STi in the photos. I can understand where some of you are coming from with your complaints about the STi. However, without some legitimate seat time, it's allll speculation. My previous cars were both BMWs. A 328i, and a 99 m3, which I still own. I was worried about the step 'down' going from the m3 to the STi. In my 1.5 months of ownership, I've only driven the m3 twice. The m3 is a very special car, but getting out of the STi and into the m3, it really feels quite pedestrian.

As far as interior quality goes - the STi is more than adequate. The new Saab 92x shares interiors with the 05 STi, which was signifigantly upgraded from the 04 STi. It surely does not feel like the interior of an economy car (liek the evo, perhaps?) I have not had any creaks, rattles, broken parts, or any other issues. Controls are intuitively placed. There is no leather to be seen, but there are gobs and gobs of alacantara, which I love. The car comes standard with 17" forged BBS wheels, insanely sticky Bridgestones and Brembo big brakes on all 4 corners. The car easily outhandles my modified m3 on the street. The boost is intoxicating. I find myself feeding the car throttle just to hear it. The visceral sensory input this car gives you, as the driver, is just insane. I absolutely love driving it.

That being said, I can easily overlook the metal trunk lock, the monstrous (yet functional, as that video shows me taking two sweepers at 140+) wing and hood scoop, and the car's boy racer appeal. Fortunately, at its $33k+ sticker price, most boy racers are stuck with their civics. The STi is a car ripe with heritage, and I can easily say it is the most enjoyable car I have ever driven.

Cheers.

stichris,

I really like the STi and have all the respect in the world for it. I test drove an 05 and it's an amazing vehicle, for sure. However, I must admit that the looks are probably the biggest thing that drove me away from it. The blue interior, although very functional, was just bit much for me and the wing is just WAY over the top. Keep in mind that this is coming from a 34 year old with a wife and 2 kids. The styling was just a bit "young" for me. When I left the Subaru dealer I went less than a mile down the street to the Audi dealer (Beechmont area of Cincinnati). I drove an A4 1.8 and a 3.0, and while they handled great, they just couldn't compare to the 300hp of the STi. Just for grins I decided to drive the S4 (hell, they had 4 in stock so why not?) I absolutely fell in love. A short time later, it was mine. The rest, as they say, is history.

Again, all the respect in the world for the STi. It performs just beautifully. I do understand the functionality of the wing, but it's just insanely large. Judging by the WRX forums, it seems to be a fairly common complaint as I noticed a fair number of posts about it with suggestions of swapping the trunk lid out with straight WRX owners and even some 3rd party mods were done to make shorter carbon fiber wings, etc. I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time!

Enjoy the ride!!!

Thanks for the reply. The s4 is a great car! I don't disagree in the least aobut the wing. I do have plans to remove the wing and hoodscoop (once I get a FMIC). I am waiting on some more technical data on a less obscene wing that will still provide a noticeable reduction in lift at speed.

the good thing about the location of the intercooler on the sti is the instant low end, there's virtually no lag at all. i've ridden in wrx's with fmic's and there's a noticable increacse in turbo lag. just something to think about. the scoop does block the view, especially for short people such as myself, and dont' even get me started on the wing. haha. the sti is a fun car. if you like going fast there's few cars close to the price that can push you into your seats like it can. but anyone with even a hint of common sense will tell you audis' are just much more classier, which goes without saying.

As much as there are complaints about the wing, its there because its functional. It really isnt too much in the line of sight either. Not like the wing on my M3 which pretty much blocks out the front of any car behind me because of the angle of the lip. Best thing about that is I never see any suv headlights behind me. Lastly though, in these cars, who the hell is worried about whats behind considering you just passed what is now there!

that is CRAZY hyper...I wonder if his leg was shaking after going that speed. when I hit 143 on my M, I told myself, I'd never speed like that again. nice vid though :)

A4 is a luxury sports sedan, STi is a straight performance sedan. I agree wholeheartedly - I just disagreed with people going as far as saying the STi has a cheap, plasticky (new word!) interior.

John - the car was so unbelievably solid at those speeds, I didn't even think twice. We were at 140+ for a decent amount of time. Truthfully, it really didn't feel liek anyhting over 110 or so. It probably would have been different in daylight.

Chris

PS - I can't wait for stage 1! 350hp, 385 ft-lbs, under $2k. That translates to over 300awhp.
