Is the unit overheating?

Any codes? Have you double checked & made sure all the wiring is secure?

its definitely not overheating. i got it for my b5 s4 so there might be a wiring issue i guess? ill have to find those keys to get it out and ill take a look at it. oh yea another thing it doesnt do is light up when i turn my headlights on. very annoying.

I know what it is. It's your can bus wires. These are the yellow wires from the cluster. You may also need to reset the Nav unit.

Shutting off after half an hour means your CAN bus isn't connected properly. That's also why it doesn't light up. Both those signals come over the CAN bus.

Get a VAG-COM and check it's correctly coded for your car, and that there are no fault codes.

If you moved it form a B5 to a B6 it WILL be coded incorrectly.
