i guess the title is pretty self explanitory. ive been in a recent hunt for an early mid 90s sporty audi. I have a 2002 s4 and i want something else to tinker with and beat around for fun. something like a quattro, though i hear they have some problems. a well maintained quattro or anything else sporty(manual preferably). any information would be awesome.

Lots of good choices out there. I would go for a I-5 20v turbo 5-speed for sure.

My list (not too sporty, but fast and comfortable):
UrQuattro w/ 20v conversion
95.5 S6 Avant
95 S6 Avant
91 200 Avant
95.5 S6
91 200

The UrS4's would round out the list. Oh, and a RS2 conversion on any of them would be nice.

They are around. A friend has a 95 S6 that came from Jersey, but that seach started in Colorado. So it's hard to tell.

If you are looking for a project car don't be affraid of 100,000 mile or higher cars. 100,000 is still reliable transportation, and 200,000 is still usually pretty good on the i-5's.

4000's are sweet little cars too if you want to broaden your seach some.

2nd the 4000q as a great quattro car worth building. Plenty on the tracks around SF.

I agree with Rob on the 20v. Its such a reliable engine mechanically. Some problems you may experience buying a car with the I5 are:

Electrical system, alternator does not last long, and power seems to be taken from the battery quicker than usual.

Fuel injection. Depending on the year and model, the fuel injectors have a tendency to fail, especially as the cars age. These are not cheap ($250 each).

other than those problems, the car with the I5 would probably be the best choice for an older car you can dick around in and have some fun
