Congratulations!! That's pretty cool.
I developed two different patentable items myself but unfortunately they were both on Company time so the Company got the patents and all I got was an atta-boy!

So what's patented? The pod on top altogether or your design which is offset to the right? For example, the ecs one looks like yours but is in the middle. Are they infringing on your patent?

What is patented?
The design, how it looks and how it attaches.
I spoke to my lawyer about the ECS one and he did advise me about it but I will reserve any comments until a more time passes.

I was just wondering because they look similar but they came out with theirs after you.
I'll be picking yours up soon though...just have some other stuff to install first. [up]
I actually emailed you about it a while back...I'm a friend of the guy you bought your ride from (TM). [:)]

awesome! congrats dude. Curious tho, what does it cost, and what is the process like to patent something? I have a few things i'd like to patent but I dont know where to start.

I don't know the exact cost as I have submitted applications for USA, Canada and Europe and I haven't broken down the amounts, but I spent about a total of $5000 to date and I have the US and European numbers assigned to me.
The cost does depend on what you are trying to patent, what countries you want to have protection in and how much digging is required to see what else there is. The more streamlined your submission the cheaper it is since there is less time sending stuff back and forth and/or resubmitting applications.
The costs are different in Canada and the USA compared to Europe as they have a blanket submission that works across every country in the EU.
To start the process you would find a patent lawyer close to you and speak to them about your ideas and they will reiterate what I stated about and you can then decide the path you would like to take.

It's not that much considering I have protection throughout all of Europe and the USA now and Canada is coming next.
The cost to make the pod is a hell of lot more than to protect it.

Congratulations! This is a big step!
This patent actually means something, since you actually have a successful product to go with it! Not like most other patents these days which are filed so that companies can sue each other into submission long before either has a viable product.
Good job on this patent and your pods!
I'm looking forward to see what your next endeavor will be.

Congrats man [up] Just curious, but about how many pods did you have to sell to cover the initial cost of the molds?

wow! nice work winston...(im assuming that is your name)
soooo everyone at AZ gets a freebie right? or at least a sweet discount.
keep us posted
p.s. how do you go about mass producing something like this?

I had to sell around 400 pods to break even for the first design which only happened a couple of months ago.
I took the money I made back and made two new pod designs. I have to sell about the same amont for the B5 and VW Mk4 pods that will be released in the next couple of month to break even.
I started this not to make money but to provide a part that didn't exist, so as long as I break even for each design then it is worth it.
